Apart from a shared focus on community relations, this year’s candidates for Notre Dame stu d en t body p re s id en t and vice president vary greatly in experi ence, goals and age. One ticket is led by current stu den t body vice p residen t Lizzi Shappell. Another is headed by Jason Laws, a m em ber of the 2004-05 national championship fencing team . Another two are completely comprised of fresh m en — an d the fifth is sp lit between a sophomore and fresh man, bringing the total num ber of freshmen in the race to five. The pair boasting the most stu dent governm ent experience is Shappell and junior class presi dent Bill Andrichik, both juniors. Given their ties to the current adm inistration, led by student body p re s id e n t Dave B aron , Shappell said continuing to pur sue this year’s student govern ment initiatives is “to be expect ed.” “Obviously, we have some con tinuity,” Shappell said. “The ordi nance issue, we think that’s huge ... it will be at the forefront [of our administration].” In light of s tu d en t evictions from Turtle Creek A partm ents after last sum m er’s passage of the disorderly house ordinance by the South Bend Com m on Council, community relations has been a focus of Baron’s presiden cy. Shappell and Andrichik prom ise to pick up where the current administration leaves off, build ing partnerships with the Notre Dame Law School to a rra n g e legal aid clinics, a telephone hot line and office hours as resources to help off-campus students. Less w eighty p lan s inc lude p u sh in g th e sp rin g se m e s te r move-out day from Saturday to Sunday and adding items to the G rab-and-G o system , such as ram en noodles and popcorn. Shappell and Andrichik have been heavily involved in student government since freshman year, w hen S happell se rved on the S erv ice an d S p iritu a lity Committee for then-student body p re s id e n t Emily Chin and A ndrich ik w as the S tan fo rd Freshm an Class Council rep re sen tative and Freshm an Class Treasurer.
