Apart from a shared focus on community relations, this year’s candidates for Notre Dame stu­ d en t body p re s id en t and vice president vary greatly in experi­ ence, goals and age. One ticket is led by current stu­ den t body vice p residen t Lizzi Shappell. Another is headed by Jason Laws, a m em ber of the 2004-05 national championship fencing team . Another two are completely comprised of fresh­ m en — an d the fifth is sp lit between a sophomore and fresh­ man, bringing the total num ber of freshmen in the race to five. The pair boasting the most stu­ dent governm ent experience is Shappell and junior class presi­ dent Bill Andrichik, both juniors. Given their ties to the current adm inistration, led by student body p re s id e n t Dave B aron , Shappell said continuing to pur­ sue this year’s student govern­ ment initiatives is “to be expect­ ed.” “Obviously, we have some con­ tinuity,” Shappell said. “The ordi­ nance issue, we think that’s huge ... it will be at the forefront [of our administration].” In light of s tu d en t evictions from Turtle Creek A partm ents after last sum m er’s passage of the disorderly house ordinance by the South Bend Com m on Council, community relations has been a focus of Baron’s presiden­ cy. Shappell and Andrichik prom­ ise to pick up where the current administration leaves off, build­ ing partnerships with the Notre Dame Law School to a rra n g e legal aid clinics, a telephone hot­ line and office hours as resources to help off-campus students.
